HURDLES OF MEDICAL SCHOOL

With its glamour and glory comes its own pain, medical school is the aspiration of thousands who seek to be a health professional, in all universities that it is found in, the medical school is being given utmost attention by the university's administration, their students are treated with extra care as this is seen by the act of these universities providing special medical hostels for these students as well as setting aside for them the best of class rooms e.t.c, this is quite needful as these students are to deal with other people's life, and so the best environment should be provided for them by the school.

One might get to think from the previous paragraph that medical school, is the sweetest place to be in, although true but not totally, there are lots of issues medical students go through that the world does not see as well as their families, cases have been reported of medical students commiting suicide many a times, these cases points to the fact that there is more to medical school than one could probably from outside.

Medical school is the home of fear, if there is any department in any university that could imbibe fear into her students, then the department of medicine owns the award, right from the 100 level classes alot of terrible information are being passed to these freshers as they are usually refered to by older colleagues, although i term them terrible but am afraid of how true they happen to be, the first fear of a medical student is that of dropping out from the school of medicine, this is not just a fear but more of a reality, at 100 level, in most federal institutions, if a medical student is to fail any basic course outside the general studies text, such a student would be demanded to withdraw from school of medicine and go to another department, Quite terrible right?, but so true, this has posed a big fear in the hearts of so many fresher medical students, as with just one failure in any course, the dream of being a medical doctor could actually remain a dream till death as they would have been kicked out, although this makes them to study hard so as not to fail, but i bet that is not the best way to study as many a times they do not study to know but rather just to scale through their exams and this would eventually lead to the act known as "cramming", an act that they ought not to do.

Not only could a medical student be withdrawn from the department at 100 level, but at all other levels as well even the almighty 600 levels, does that not sound terrible that after 5 years of hard study and exams, one could still be withdrawn?, sound terrible right but so true, so there is this ever constant fear in the hearts of all medical students irrespective of their respected levels, they could still leave the almighty school of medicine without the MBBS degree, this actually leads to depression at any time they feel they are not studying hard enough as if they get to fail, depending on the level and exam, they could actually recite the exam, repeat the level or the worst leave the school. Then comes along the thought of family, how would they tell their parents they had left school of medicine, one story no parent would love to hear, most especially if they have the harsh ones, medical students are looked up to in their families by their respective members, how could they bring the news to them?, all these thoughts but help stimulate and facilitate depression most especially when they eventually fail a course.

outside the family realms, medical school as was stated in our former posts is one place for the elites, 80% of her students are from very rich homes, coming from a poor background and finding yourself in medical school might be very challenging for such a person, this is so as such a person would hardly have friends, his or her colleagues who are from wealthy homes might not want to associate themselves with someone from a poor background, this itself leads to depression again for such a person, he might not get his voice to be heard, this is a basic yearn for all, he might not be respected, he sure would be left out of issues pertaining to the class as he is counted as nil. this side for the poor medical students, eventually leads to a low self esteem, as he or she now sees his or her colleagues better than his or herself, now couple inferiority complex and depressions and then tell me what you get?, i guess someone who sees suicide as fun right?.

as weird as it might seem, but it is so totally true, not leaving behind the almighty and constant stress that comes along, medical students do not always have one thing and that is time, they are always exhausted from classes and postings for hours in the hospital, yet they would still have to cook, wash and get to read textbooks of thousands of pages. this is just part of that which they go through in medical school, expect the part 2.
